Shobana shares her experience...

Humanitarian workers are always recognised by people for the courage and passion to serve despite being in a risky situation.

This is the view of Empower Pacific’s team leader and senior counsellor in Labasa, Shobana Kiran Indal.

Hailing from Labasa, Ms Indal has a Bachelor of Counselling and is working for the organisation for 14 years.

Speaking about her profession, Ms Indal said, “Those ‘aha’ moments are incredible and I speak from both a client and counsellor perspective here.”

“It’s a moment when as a client you feel as though, quite literally, someone has just turned the lights on in a darkened room,”she said

“As a counsellor, it’s a privilege to help a client obtain a new perspective in such a profound manner.

“Those revelations open our eyes to so many things, whether it be our thoughts or behaviours or that of others who impact our lives.”

Ms Indal has many memories so far as the Labasa team leader and senior counsellor with Empower Pacific.

She will always remember braving through the floods to serve the community, who appreciated her and her team’s service with smiles and tears of happiness and joy.

Other memories include:-

*reuniting children with parents and witnessing the profound impact on the lives of individuals, families and communities.

*training volunteers for disaster preparedness and then witnessing them pass that knowledge to the communities.

*conducting professional development sessions for medical professionals to motivate and empower them.

Ms Indal is part of the strong Empower Pacific team that can communicate, operate and innovate in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
